    This is the most basic way of creating inventories. What messes with my brain is doing something abstract like you don't know what's going to be in the inventory it's just a container, and whatever the player picks up gets pushed into the inventory. But doing it so without accidentally pushing the same thing into a slot or stacking each etc. is a pain in the ass. Especially when it comes to removing stuff from the inventory without duplicating it it, ahhhhhhhhhhh

    Learning with this and it's so good so far! Following along at my own pace is the best way I learn and you explain it very comprehensibly. The code for this also gives me a chance to insert and try things on my own, as I'm consulting the SugarCube documentation as we go, along with some other videos on SugarCube and twine. For example, I found a way to use temporary macros in order to roll dice (roll for perception) when inside the crypt. This lesson in particular is really helpful for setting modifiers. I can't wait to get further to combine macros with user inputs. I know this is 2 years late but this is the solution I found. <<linkreplace "Take the shovel." t8n>>\ You take the shovel. \ <<set $hasShovel to true>>\ <</linkreplace>> <<else>>\ You notice an open grave. <</if>>\ You just had to move the \ from AFTER the <</linkreplace>> to AFTER the You take the shovel line, since the space in your code only appears within the linkreplace reading and you want it to be there even before you replace the link. I think that's why it behaved the way it did. Anyway, you've earned a subscribe from me. Excellent teaching, and thank you for making the lessons in such bite size chunks.

    I suspect things have changed over the last year because I have nothing but trouble with trying to implement audio and image files. Images I can only get to display if I link fully to Dropbox (gdrive was a dead end, in spite of share folders), and music I could only get to play by linking the same way from the Java script tab. When I try it the way of this excellent guide it does not intialize. I suspect the web version of Twine is the problem, and that it does not appear to support local files. Perhaps I should use the app version? Any advice from passers by appreciated.

      I worked out the images, by using the app and working from folders in the same location as the game html. Still no luck with audio.

    The reason there is an extra break is that you have to do this: <<linkreplace "Take the shovel.">>\ You take the shovel.\ <</linkreplace>>\ With two extra enters after. I'm not sure why but that's the fix I found.

    Edit: I started a new story and its working fin now Trying to use the link replace but it throws up an error when i test it "You walk down the dimly lit corridor of your apartment building. Its been a long day at work and all you can think of is collapsing on your bed. Your feet drag on the floor as you<<linkreplace "walk">>walk. You walk past the buildings crack addict. His eyes wild and unfocused as he watches you walk by. You ignore him as you speed up your pass. His never bothered you before, so you dont bother him. You walk past your neighbour’s open door to head to your own apartment door. Your stop though as you hear the intense argument your [[neighbours]] are engaged in. <</linkreplace>>" I dont know what I'm doing wrong.

    The playing of audio isn't working for me. Has the method been changed since this video came out? Edit: For anyone else having this issue, it might just be due to how twine works. Open up the HTML file, found in the same directory where your audio and image files are stored. That got the audio playing for me.

    I'm fairly new to this. Is there anyway to get the audio to play outright on the first passage? I have a title screen page where I want the audio to play immediately. I can get it to play when going to another passage, so I know it works, but not when I first open the game for some reason.

    A better way to do your grave digger lines to take all of that code for the different rooms and throw it in a passage and call it something then use the include shortcut SugarCude has to include that code into each passage. This makes it easier to edit in the long run since you only need to edit one passage and not 3. You can also do this for storyInit. I like to add my characters vars to their own passage and then include them into my storyInit passage. Let's say you have a passage called "graveDiggerRoom", and you want to include that into a passage you would do: << include "graveDiggeRoom">>

    In the interest of code deduplication, you should prefer something like <<if $unconscious is true or $hasKey is true>>. That said, $unconscious will always be true when $hasKey is true, so checking $hasKey is superfluous. Of course, I understand if it's simply for having a slightly more complex example. Enjoying the series!

      I dont understand why people say checking $hasKey is superfluous maybe because I'm missing something, but isn't the player can (intentionally/not) knock the gravedigger WITHOUT taking the key?

    Really pays to be patient. I almost got frustrated because the image wouldn't load, I thought it was because I was using a mac so maybe the path would work differently. Then 2 seconds after you showed why it didn't work.

An alternative solution for going to the correct gravedigger room from the fountain is: <<if $unconscious is true>>\ You see a silhouette to the [[West|Unconscious]]. <<else>>\ You see a silhouette to the [[West|Gravedigger]]. <</if>>\ The corresponding code for leaving the path to the gravedigger is: <<if $unconscious is true>>\ You see a silhouette to the [[North|Unconscious]]. <<else>>\ You see a silhouette to the [[North|Gravedigger]]. <</if>>\ One doesn't have to worry about checking $hasKey at all this way.

    Really enjoying these tutorials so far! Super helpful, and you explain everything so well. I actually LOLed when you kept going back to the now keyless Gravedigger and repeatedly hitting him with the shuffle... Poor guy. Thanks for creating this series!
